This interview is a follow-up to a previous interview by S. Weart in 1978. The interview deals with Oertel's career since then. Primary topics are Oertel's time at Department of Energy and his participation in various nuclear waste programs. Interactions with environmentalists, other agencies. In 1986, Oertel became president of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. Remainder of interview focuses on his involvement with AURA, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Gemini Telescopes Project, and the astronomy community in general.
